What are your FUN goals?

Hello friends,

Obviously I love goal setting and planning, but sometimes I get bogged down in the problem solving and forget that it is supposed to be fun.

Earlier this year, I saw a post by tumblr user songofsaraneth that really resonated with me:

every time i ask people if they do any new years resolutions its all ooooo i dont like making them bc i fail or ohhhhh no i couldnt keep up wiht that and then when they ask me and i tell them about Pasta Quest (i am eating as many different pasta shapes as possible in the space of a year) or when i did Fruit Adventures (every time i saw a fruit i had never eaten before id get one and eat it and read the wikipedia article about it) theyre like hang on i forgot you can make Fun Ones i want a fun one.

I think I’m going to go on fruit and veggie adventures this year where I try all the fruits and veggies I’ve never encountered before and learn about them.

It reminded me of this post last year from Activist and Writer Emily Ladau:

She defines FUN Goals as
Flexible - Life happens, things change, goals shift.
Uplifting - Bettering myself isn’t a punishment.
Numberless - Life won’t be radically different if I read 29 books this year instead of 30.

Lots of people responded to both posts and shared some of their fun goals. Here are some of the ones I found particularly inspiring or funny (most pulled from this list):

  • Make your home cozier

  • Do a sneeze count

  • Anytime you feel the impulse to compliment someone, actually do it

  • Pick a color to wear more often

  • Wink more

  • Wear more silly little outfits

  • Wear more hats

  • Be nice to bugs

Another one I did last year was to take a picture of the lake almost every day when I walked my dog Felix past it.

Take 5-15 minutes and write about

What are your FUN goals?

I want to practice more figure drawing. I want to read more books. I want to get back to keeping a list of every book, tv series, or movie that anyone recommends to me and work my way thru the list. I want to make a bunch of fun ice shapes and with different fruit or flowers in it and make cute little drinks for myself every day. I want to use my gurgle pot more. Now that I live very near a college campus, I want to go to lots of little talks and lunchtime concerts, and other events. I want to drink more tea. I want to try cooking more things out of cookbooks. I want to dance more. I want to make music with friends. I want to bake lots of little things (hard with the low carb, but I guess I want to learn how to bake lots of low carb cookies and cakes and bread). I want to go to estate sales this year.

For me goal setting is about getting myself closer to my ideal life and my ideal life does not include a lot of guilt and shame for goals that I don't meet exactly the way I wanted to or intended to.

Your friend,
Laura
